John is the author of a wide range of career titles, all published by McGraw-Hill Professional. He has a regular careers column in People Management and writes regularly for The Times and The Guardian. His appears regularly in the national press and also in Management Today, Real World, Company, Cosmopolitan, Prospects, Psychologies, Eve, Red, Marie Claire and She. His work and case studies have been profiled in Coaching at Work and The Sunday Times. He featured in the Cavendish Films DVD ‘The CV Experts’, broadcasts widely on radio, and his work has been featured on TV (he has featured on the BBC interactive ‘Back to Work’ programme and on BBC 2’s ‘Working Lunch’).
John is a graduate of the universities of Cambridge, London and Liverpool, and has spent most of his career focusing on the world of work. He has trained recruitment specialists since the mid-1980s, and is the former Chief Executive of the Institute of Employment Consultants (now the IRP). He has worked with and a large range of organisations including British Telecom, The British Council, CAFOD, Cahoot, Career Management Consultants Ltd, CIPD, HBOS, The House of Commons, HSBC, Orange, the Recruitment & Employment Confederation, The Association of MBAs, Marks & Spencer, NAPP Pharmaceutical, NIACE, Reuters, SCA, Tribal, as well as business schools across the UK. He has been elected as a Career Management Fellow (CMF) by the Institute of Career Certification International and serves on its international board.
Alongside his careers work John serves as an ordained Anglican priest in the Diocese of Chester, working with candidates who feel they have a calling to ministry.. He lives and works in Cheshire, with his wife, the children’s writer, Jan Dean, with occasional visits from their two adult sons.
